Then along came such materials as glass and acrylic, and these stole the show for some time. Now, we are once again embracing tiles and welcoming them back into our kitchens, especially on splashbacks. This time though, the variety of materials, colours, size and shape of tiles on the market is so diverse, that choosing the right one to suit your kitchen scheme can be a difficult task. Hopefully, this mini guide will give you the lowdown on splashback tile choices to help steer you in the right direction.

When Emma Manteufel wrote a slogan on the sign outside her work a year ago, she never thought it would be shared hundreds of thousands of times on social media.
Ms Manteufel does not know who originally shared the photo of the sign, but she first noticed it online in November last year when an American radio station shared it.
Almost 200,000 shares later, she said she saw the photo pop up daily in her Facebook feed.
The photo of the sign has recently been given a second-life by contestants on an Australian home renovation TV show.

It's actually a hard question considering there are quite a few different solutions out there. Do you choose glass, tiles, engineered stone, granite, Laminex Metaline or even stainless steel? Do you opt for price over looks or vice versa?
You can have the best of both worlds with tiles.
Tiles have really made a come back in the last couple of years for two good reasons: they stand the test of time and it has to be the most inexpensive option, especially since you can do-it-yourself.
Tiled splashbacks also have the added benefit of choice. There's millions of different tile choices and several ways to lay them. Think herringbone, subway or straight lay, just to name a few.

SUPAWOOD’s SUPATILE 10 acoustic timber ceiling tiles have provided a sensitive and attractive solution to address noise reverberation and accessibility in the modernisation of circa 1920’s heritage listed buildings at Wesley College in South Perth.
The brief given to Taylor Robinson Architects put significant emphasis on sustainability and respect for the heritage nature of the existing buildings. The aim was to sensitively refurbish both the Ward and Kefford buildings to provide flexible contemporary learning and administration spaces for the senior school.
High ceilings, tiled floors, exposed brickwork and large windows which accentuated noise reverberation necessitated the need for a ceiling tile product to dampen the echo. SUPATILE 10 provided the designers with flexible economic acoustic options as well as full access into the ceiling and a look that maintained a blend between the old and new elements.

Tile installation products from Laticrete were specified for a renovation project at the Ascot Vale residence, an old Victorian home built in 1906.
The homeowner retained Nicholas Murray Architects to execute a renovation project at the property involving the addition of an en-suite bathroom and powder room to the side of the house. A key challenge for the architect was to ensure the extension complemented the flow of the existing home.
Architect Nicholas Murray, builder Craig Kinney, Chris Stenhouse from Wall & Floor Tiling and the tile manufacturer Refin worked together to ensure that the finished project had impressive outcomes. A total of 81 square metres of tiling was required for the project.
To address the problem of wastage disposal of the tiles during installation, Chris suggested laying both wall and floor tiles in a random pattern where the off-cuts would be used in another row, minimising waste generation. The project used large format tiles measuring 1500mm x 750mm.

Gone are the days when tiles were confined to the bathroom and the biggest choice homeowners faced was square and white or, well, square and white.
In the past few years we’ve seen tiles move out of the bathroom and into pretty much every other room of the house.
And while white is still a popular choice, a move to patterned and textured tiles is encouraging many of us to step outside our comfort zones when it comes to adding interest to otherwise bland spaces such as the kitchen splashback, powder room, laundry and even alfresco living areas.

National Tiles has observed a growing interest from buyers in large format tiles for walls and floors.
Till a few years ago, the large format tile was a rarity; however, thanks to technological improvements in tile manufacturing, tiles in sizes such as 600 x 600mm, 800 x 800mm and 500 x 1000mm are now available in a variety of styles, presenting exciting design possibilities for walls and floors.
National Tiles recommends large format tiles for several reasons:
They’re beautifully simple. One of the recent trends in bathroom and kitchen design is to install large format tiles so that an expansive, seamless appearance is achieved with minimal grout lines. Cleaning is also simplified as a result.
